Abstract

Security has become an increasingly visible feature of end-user systems in recent years, thanks in large part to the upsurge in the range and volume of online threats. As a consequence, we have seen (for example) the functionality of Internet security suites broadening considerably beyond their origins as anti-virus tools, as well as the increased prominence of security-related functions within the wider operating system and applications. However, while the profile of security has increased, there is often a gap between those situations in which it is being used and those in which it is used well, as evidenced by cases in which the features are available, but end up being incorrectly configured.^1
