Abstract

This paper provides an overview of technologies required to support end-to-end quality of service guarantees for multimedia communications over the Internet. We first discuss the main requirements of multimedia communications and general approaches to meeting these requirements. We describe in details different architectures including integrated service model, differentiated service model and multiprotocol label switching that are currently being proposed and developed. End system support including hardware and operating systems and layered media encoding are also discussed.
