This paper examines the common uses and characteristics of demand-driven surrogate origin servers (also known as reverse proxies and HTTP accelerators), attempts to motivate the definition of a distinct role for them, suggests items for consideration during the development of such a framework, and identifies issues associated with current implementations. The author's primary goal is to encourage discussion and further research of these points.
