Abstract

This paper describes a modelling methodology based on formal description techniques (FDTs). This methodology develops simulation models designed to evaluate asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) networks. The purpose of such networks is to integrate multiple communication services by providing a variety of service classes with different characteristics, making a wide range of adaptation protocols and traffic management mechanisms necessary. All these mechanisms and their interactions are usually evaluated by means of simulation, but this requires complex simulation models to be developed. Our proposal is based on specification and description language (SDL), and using its object-oriented capabilities to systematically develop simulation models, including many combinations of the mechanisms under study, to any degree of complexity. In order to demonstrate its use, the simulation results were applied in a significant case study.
