Abstract

In order to speed up a computer-aided design (CAD) method we introduced parallel algorithms. We are planning to implement Q parallel processes on an Apollo network of N"s processors. We estimate the optimal values of Q and N"s by comparing response times of the monoprocess program and of the multiprocess program. This is done in three steps. In the first step, a network model is used to obtain pro-cess-response times as functions of computation times of the network parameters and of the network load. On the second step, a simulation of the network gives the performance of parallel processes, taking into account only computation time ratios. On the final step, the results of the first steps are used to derive the performance of parallel processes by comparing response times. It appears that the comparison of response times may give a very different result from those obtained by comparison of computation times. The notion of response-time speedup is very important.
