Reduction in computer software errors by use of preventive and detective tools and techniques is illustrated using data from three large software projects. A tradeoff analysis of costs of early application (during design) of a tool to prevent errors with costs of later correction (during test) is presented using a simplified model, and also illustrated using data from one of the projects.
