This paper provides a method of porting GeoServer GIS application to various Linux distributions, with special focus to Ubuntu and Fedora. Unlike in the case of MS Windows and MacOS X systems, when coming to Linux, there is no universal user-friendly GeoServer installer. This paper presents a proposition of installation steps for enabling proper working conditions of GeoServer application in Linux environment. The proposed methodology encompasses an overview of installation, user access rights settings, testing and troubleshooting activities. It also puts the light on the advantages of Linux as a GeoServer platform, with regard to other operating system platforms and discuses its applicability to mobile ad hoc networks.
