The patterns in this document are particularly intended for researchers as well as practitioners who study and develop large-scale decentralized systems - including decentralized control systems, internet applications. The reader should be familiar with typical issues and challenges in developing distributed systems, and be acquainted with elementary terminology of agents and multi-agent systems (MAS, [Wooldridge 2009]), and the discrete optimization metaheuristic called Ant Colony Optimization [Dorigo and Di Caro 1999].
