Abstract

This paper studies varieties of the CSMA/CA protocols in wireless network domain and aim to improve the energy consumption at the MAC layer. We investigated some mechanisms and techniques used to improve the CSMA/CA. We found that those protocols are classified in two categories based on the number of channels they use. Some protocols only use one channel for data and control, while others use two or more channels. Consequently, we developed a simulation tool in order to compare the access methods used in the standard IEEE 802.11 DCF (distribution coordination function) and the IEEE 802.11 DCFO2CH (DCF over two channel). Experimental results show that the utilization of two channels is better than one vis-à-vis power conservation and useful data ratio.
