Abstract

Recent mobile phone research has focused predominately on identifying and understanding the needs of teenage users. As a consequence little knowledge is available with respect to the needs and wants of older users. To address this gap in knowledge, we carried out a survey to assess the age influence on mobile phone use and preferences. The results demonstrate that mobile phone users' needs and preferences do indeed differ in relation to their age. Consequently, the negative implications of the current market research approach, that focuses primarily on the youth and savvy users, are discussed as support for taking the inclusive design approach in future mobile phone design. A possible avenue to achieve inclusive phone design based on individualisation and the four pleasures framework [4] for designing pleasurable products is proposed.
