Using scripting to achieve realistic behavior in constructive simulation scenarios is, at best, difficult and time-consuming, and at worst, impossible. To investigate new approaches to agent behavior, Technology Solutions Experts, Inc. (TSE) developed the Reasoning, Planning, and Goal-Seeking (RPGS) framework as a high-level cognitive model for agents. RPGS is based on the idea of giving Soldier agents a goal, the means to work toward that goal, and the conditions under which the goal is fulfilled; the Soldier agent then autonomously determines how to best to accomplish the goal on the move. Dynamic factors of the scenario feed back into the agent's behavior to determine steps to take and provide Situational Awareness (SA) for decisions in order to fulfill the goal. The RPGS agent implemented in the Infantry Warrior Simulation (IWARS) demonstrated dynamic behavior and the ability to act proactively in ways that would be difficult, tedious, or impossible to accomplish using conventional mission scripting or state machines. We conclude that the RPGS framework is a promising approach to developing autonomous agent behavior for constructive military simulation, and merits additional research.
