This paper deals with the Channel Assignment Problem (CAP) in a hexagonal cellular network. The CAP in cellular network is known to belong to the class of Non Deterministic Polynomial (NP) complete optimisation problems. This problem is being solved by tools like simulated annealing, neural networks, Genetic Algorithm (GA) and other heuristic methods. In this paper, a Modified Particle Swarm Optimisation (MPSO) algorithm has been developed for CAP. The proposed approach mainly focuses on accelerating the convergence speed. The performance of the proposed approach is analysed by applying it to a well-known benchmark problem. The result of MPSO algorithm shows that the proposed technique is an attractive one than the other existing techniques.
