This paper describes VIRMANEL, a new, open source (LGPL) tool that we developed to run experiments and evaluate protocols and algorithms on mobile multihop networks using real software and real operating systems. VIRMANEL comprises an integrated domain-specific language to define new mobility models, a Graphical User Interface to study the behavior of mobiles nodes and a controller engine that emulates a multihop mobile network by setting firewall rules between virtual machines to define network connectivity. Designed to work with OpenVZ, an efficient operating system-level virtualization tool, VIRMANEL combines ease of use and efficiency by enabling the study of large networks distributed over multiple physical machines.
