In this paper, we report on six design patterns derived from a study conducted on the usage of a university library in Japan. These patterns are meant to be used by a librarian who wishes to make a more effective usage of a particular space within the library. The study was performed in the form of a four day workshop with six students from the university under the instruction of a group of designers and researchers. One of the characteristics of these design patterns is that they are based on library users' behavioral data gathered over two weeks prior to and during the workshop by the participants. In other words, although all the associated behavioral data is not provided in the paper due to the space limitation, each of the patterns can be associated with people's behavioral data which can be used as evidences on how the resulting pattern is formed. We believe, the approach described in this paper can open up a new method for creating design patterns as well as a new pattern language.
