Abstract

Software Engineering has adopted the idea of the pattern language from architectonics. It has utilized an aspect of the pattern language as a know-how description format. Design Patterns, Pattern-Oriented Software Architecture etc. are significant examples of these efforts. The pattern language has the other aspect--- the "timeless way" as a set of continuous activities to implement continuous learning organizations. This aspect of the pattern language may be an ideal tool for chief information officers (CIOs) to describe concepts and long-term plans of their enterprise information systems. Developed pattern languages would be utilized to describe the proto-requirements as well as design restrictions (design codes) to cover the whole life cycle of enterprise information systems. This paper proposes a way to compile and apply pattern languages to enterprise information systems with some actual pattern language examples.
