Proper choice of denoising filter is a very important requirement for efficient image restoration because most of the filters only reduce the effect of the noise rather than removing it. This paper gives a comparative evaluation of different de-speckling algorithms through the quantitative analysis of uteral ultrasound images. The performance of seven speckle suppression algorithms has been assessed; which include approaches like wavelet filtering, local statistics filtering, pixel homogeneity, geometric filtering and homomorphic filtering. Wavelet and geometric filtering algorithms have been further improved in this work by using thresholding schemes for noise suppression in ultrasound images. Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR) and Speckle Suppression Index (SSI) are used as quality parameters for evaluating the performances of various algorithms. Simulation results indicate that the improved wavelet and the geometric filtering algorithms give the most impressive results keeping the finer features intact in comparison to other methods.
