Abstract

Computing projects are more likely to succeed when the leadership styles of project managers complement the working style of team members. This paper describes various project manager styles, such as autocratic, coaching, and laissez fair, and several team member working styles, such as detail-oriented, action-oriented, analyzers, and innovators. Leadership styles can be paired with working styles for efficient communication in projects with diverse characteristics: new projects, projects in progress, short-term, and long-term projects. Using publicly-available tools that identify individuals' needs and characteristics, project managers and team members can identify the types of working environments in which they can thrive. Appropriate information of leadership styles, working styles, and project characteristics can be combined to form a more balanced team composition, so that proper communication can result in a more successful project.
