Abstract

It is often said that office productivity is virtually stagnant, increasing only about 4 percent every 10 years. The methodology used to estimate this 4 percent figure is examined and found to be inaccurate! There is no known way to estimate overall national office productivity trends. Productivity trends in a single part of the economy, however, can be examined, namely, office-intensive sectors of the U.S. federal government. Productivity in these sectors is found to be anything but stagnant, having increased 1.7 percent annually from 1967 to 1981 and 3.0 percent annually from 1977 through 1981.
