Abstract

BLUE algorithm is a typical active queue management (AQM) algorithm, studies have shown that BLUE is better than the RED (Random Early Detection) algorithm. It uses packet loss and link idle events to manage congestion. However, there are still some shortcomings in parameter setting for BLUE. Especially when TCP connections changed dramatically will result in queue overflow and underflow. In this paper an improved BLUE algorithm is proposed, which introduces a parameter adaptive mechanism. The packet-dropping probability is determined by packet loss event, link idle event and the buffer usage ratio. The results of NS simulation indicated that the algorithm can effectively stabilize the queue occupation, decrease the number of active TCP connections and mitigate the queue overflow and underflow. Meanwhile, it can improve link utilization and decrease packet loss rate.
