Abstract

Welcome to the 2011 Winter Simulation Conference (WSC), recognized as the premier international conference for simulation professionals in discrete and combined discrete-continuous simulation. Our Phoenix venue this year offers a relaxing retreat, in addition to an outstanding technical conference. While enjoying this year's conference, please look forward our first European venue of Berlin in 2012; our return to Washington, DC, in 2013; and our first visit to Savannah, GA, in 2014. The conference theme for WSC '11 is Simulation for a Sustainable World. We all are aware of the threats to our environment posed by carbon emissions, oil spills, toxic waste disposal, and a plentitude of other sources on local, regional, and (alas) global scales. Throughout the program this year you will find papers describing how simulation is being applied to understand and mediate these threats and achieve a sustainable planet.
