In this paper we discuss the possibility of building advanced medical knowledge-based applications using a combination of two promising technologies: semantic web technologies for the representation of domain knowledge and known facts, and rule-based systems for the definition of rules for knowledge base. We developed a prototype web application GeneMap, which enables browsing on diseases and related genes, which are known to influence the development of a disease; the publicly available Diseasome Dataset is used as a source of semantically-annotated medical data. The prototype is used to show how the two technologies can be efficiently combined to improve both the performance of such applications and the possibility of discovering new patterns that could lead towards new medical knowledge.
