Abstract

Shape retrieval is to find shapes in a database similar to the query one. For this purpose two components are usually needed, shape representation and shape matching. In this paper, a new shape retrieval algorithm based on the curvature scale-space (CSS) representation and the parabolic fitting technique is proposed. First, by a parabolic fitting of the arc-shaped contours in CSS maps, several sets of parameters are obtained for shape representation, which are the coefficients of the fitting polynomials. Then, shape matching is achieved by a comparison of the parameter sets of the query shape and the database shapes. The distance between every pair of compared shapes is measured and the database shapes are ranked according to their distance to the query shape. The proposed algorithm is tested and evaluated on two shape databases.
