Abstract

The wide application of information and communication technology (ICT) in smart grid will introduce new dependencies. Therefore, new dependability analysis of the power grid, the ICT infrastructure and their interactions are needed to ensure a highly dependable power supply. The commonly used modeling approaches for dependability are only applicable to a subset of the systems encountered. We show an approach for dependability analysis in smart grid, which extends the application of the analytical approach to problems usually solved by simulation. Our approach combines structural and dynamic models and exploits their complementary advantages. In particular, we show how a Markov model can be used during the pivotal decomposition to include dependencies between entities, limited repair facilities, and other system dynamics in reliability block diagram.
