Version control of large-scale models is still an open problem in Model Driven Engineering settings. In this paper we review a number of existing approaches for model version control and identify the benefits and challenges they introduce. To address the identified challenges we propose a modular and scalable model indexing framework that enables developers to efficiently perform queries over large collections of models stored in robust and widely-used version control systems. We also present the results of evaluating a prototype implementation of the proposed framework against large-scale models of the order of 100s or 1000s of MBs.
