In bi-histogram equalization (BBHE), the original image is decomposed into two sub-images by a proper thresholding and then the two sub-images are equalized independently. In this case, the thresholding becomes a key issue. An iterative method for selecting the best thresholding value was previously proposed by our group. In this paper, a iterative method is further introduced into the Partially Overlapped Sub-block Histogram Equalization algorithm (POSHE) for the sub-block histogram equalization. The resulted new Iterative thresholding based Partially Overlapped Sub-blocks Bi-Histogram Equalization algorithm (IPOSBHE) can enhance local image details and at the same time preserve effectively the input image brightness. Experimental results on both dim medical image and bright scene image have demonstrated the superior performance of IPOSBHE on POSHE. The blocking effect on the image can be successfully eliminated and the equalized image shows a more natural visual impression.
