Abstract

This paper describes the development of a handwriting training system for users with upper extremity disability. A computer-based system equipped with a haptic device is developed to produce both visual and haptic cues to assist trainees to write Chinese characters in proper ways. Forces are generated interactively to guide trainee's hand along the desired path. A pilot study involving three subjects with cerebral palsy has been conducted to evaluate the usability of the system. Comments from occupational therapists are also collected to improve the system.
