Abstract

This paper presents a novel virtual interface system based on augmented reality (AR) techniques. The ARVKs (augmented reality based virtual keyboards) that have been developed based on this virtual interface system can accomplish user inputs with slight head or finger movements. There are two types of ARVKs: (1) MBVK (marker-based VKs), where the VK is augmented on the marker, and (2) OSVK (on-screen VKs) where the VK is displayed on the computer screen. These ARVKs can assist handicapped and elderly individuals to control electronic devices and access computer functions at home without the aid of others. The proposed virtual interface system and the ARVKs can also be applied to portable AR systems.
