Abstract

There were several studies on sedentary behavior showing dangerous signs to health. Recently, to measure level of daily activity, several works showed that a 3-axis accelerometer designed to attach to the waist of users could be employed to obtain user's activity very well. However, due to the low availability of devices, the applications were limited to only patients that required special attentions and were required to closely monitor under controlled environment. Today smart phones become more ubiquitous today and are equipped with a 3-axis accelerometer. It will be very useful if an activity detection system is implemented in these smart phones. The system will apply not only to patients with special needs in a special control environment, but to normal persons who want to know their daily activities for their own different purposes. In this work, we study the use of smart phones to track human daily activity into 4 activities: sleep, rest, walk and drive. Three important issues are addressed in this work including battery consumption, varying specification of accelerometer chips, and classification in an uncontrolled free environment.
