Abstract

This chapter is not intended to fully acquaint the reader with APL. For this purpose the reader is referred to Grey [5]. Here we give a brief history of the language and its uses. Some features which set APL apart from more traditional languages such as Pascal and Fortran are discussed. Also discussed are APL random files, which are essential to the work of subsequent chapters.
