Abstract

In this paper, we make an attempt to characterize the distribution of broadcast delay using SIRS epidemic protocol in Delay Tolerant network (DTNs) where some of the agents use directional antenna (DA) instead of using traditional onmidirectional antenna (OA). Directional antennas (DA) can create longer range contacts than omnidirectional antennas with the same transmission power, and hence have the potential to cover a larger area faster if deployed suitably. In many applications, reducing the latency and the amount of network resources used for broadcasting a message is important for properly utilizing the message and prolonging the life time of the mobile devices used in DTNs. We investigate the use of DA in DTNs to reduce the latency and the number of useless contacts (a metric to measure network resource utilization). We also propose a history-based strategy to reduce the number of useless contacts and evaluate its performance in various scenarios.
