Abstract

The performance of underwater acoustic communications is linked to the capability of a communication system to cope with a large variety of underwater acoustic channel dynamics, which are dependent on the environmental and seasonal acoustic propagation conditions. One possible way to increase reliability of these systems, is to allow retransmissions, which however, may result in a large energy consumption, since transmission is the most energy consuming activity of an acoustic modem. Therefore, we here focus on a stochastic optimization problem, whereby we aim at minimizing the number of transmissions necessary to reliably transmit a given amount of information B by a given deadline T.
