Experimental testing of underwater network systems in real ocean environments has surged in recent years. The result of these at-sea experiments has led to a rise in discovery of practical issues for real systems and network protocol design. In this paper we investigate one such issue: the impact of intensity fluctuations on network throughput of selected Medium Access Control (MAC) protocols. We generate simulation results using Broadcast Mac and UW-Aloha to show that SNR fluctuation can severely impact the performance of MAC protocols, even with slight variation. Additionally, we call for the development of analytical models to improve the performance of practical MAC protocols in real environments.
