Abstract

This paper investigates the usage of e-books versus traditional books in terms of academics and education and compares each version's popularity based on their usefulness, accessibility, memorability, and usability. The participants were exposed to both e-book reading and printed reading for two subject areas and were later tested on the reading materials to gauge their memory retention from the readings. The results of this study suggest that the usefulness and usage of electronic and printed textbooks can differ from person to person based on individual preferences and the subject matter being studied. While traditional printed books took longer to read, the research subjects who used e-books scored 9--10% higher on post-reading assessments.
