Abstract

Body area networks (BAN) require careful hardware and software design which will enable the battery powered sensor devices to operate effectively and reliably over long periods of time. On body sensor design is a challenging task due to the body being in the near-field of the radio and the complex interaction between the two. Off-the-shelf wireless sensors can be optimized to realize an efficient BAN by combining an enhanced shorted patch antenna design with a cross layer energy aware protocol. Here, we demonstrate a system design approach where the performance of WBANs is greatly enhanced.
