We consider a class of the asymptotic expansions for the gamma function, and derive a formula for determining the coefficients of the asymptotic expansions. Thus, we give a unified treatment of several asymptotic expansions for the gamma function due to Laplace, Ramanujan---Karatsuba, Gosper, Mortici and Batir.
