Abstract

Biorthogonaland orthogonal filter pairs derived from the family of binomialproduct filters are considered for wavelet transform implementationwith the goal of high performance lossy image compression. Usingexperimental rate-distortion performance as the final measureof comparison, a number of new and existing filters are presentedwith excellent image coding capabilities. In addition, numerousfilter attributes such as orthonormality, transition band sharpness, coding gain, low-band reconstruction error, regularity, and vanishingmoments are assessed to determine their importance with regardsto the fidelity of the decoded images. While image data compressionis specifically addressed, many of the proposed techniques areapplicable to other coding applications.
