Abstract

SIGGROUP is about more than computer supported cooperative work. It is also concerned with how people use computer networks to obtain sociability, support, a sense of belonging, and all kinds of information1. That is why virtual community has become a new SIGGROUP focus area. This initial column briefly sketches several varieties of virtual community. Experience has taught me that while everyone knows about some types of virtual communities, few know about their many varieties.
