Abstract

We present a review of some recently developed techniques in the fieldof natural language processing. This area has witnessed a confluence ofapproaches which are inspired by theories from linguistics and thosewhich are inspired by theories from information theory: statisticallanguage models are becoming more linguistically sophisticated and themodels of language used by linguists are incorporating stochastictechniques to help resolve ambiguities. We include a discussion aboutthe underlying similarities between some of these systems and mentiontwo approaches to the evaluation of statistical language processingsystems.
