Abstract

An expert system for assistance in selecting groundwater models has been developed using INSIGHT 2+, a rule-based software tool. Our system considers specific user-supplied aquifer and groundwater characteristics and physical boundary conditions in order to generate a list of appropriate models. This system has been designed for users such as environmental consultants, government officials, and contractors.Based on our experience with this project, we will discuss design and development alternatives, as well as strategies for working with experts. This project is part of ongoing work with the International Groundwater Modeling Center of the Holcomb Research Institute, and further work is planned to access a large database of information on groundwater models.
