The research reported here concerns the use of well-behaved Entity-Relationship Diagrams (ERDs) in the logical design of database systems. Our results focus on prior ERD conditions for certain desirable logical designs, i.e. more “robust” relational scheme (e.g. in BCNF) than are obtained by ad hoc, unconditioned ERDs. The goal of our ERD-based design system is to ensure that enough conditions are present in the ERD as built interactively by the user of the demo system, so that a superior BCNF relational schema design is output by the usual subsequent transformation of the ERD.
