In this paper the 3D minimumvariance filtering problem is considered. The proposed spatiotemporalfilter is derived according to the assumption that the 3D signalcan be modelled by an ensemble of smooth 3D gaussian random fields.The resulting filtering algorithm is given by an optimal combinationof three 1D estimators and is endowed with an information onthe location about the spatiotemporal discontinuities of thesignal. This allows the filter to conciliate the two oppositerequirements of an effective noise reduction and edge preservation.
