This paper presents an novel method for overlapping or touching blob objects (particles) segmentation. It is based on the watershed transformation, one of the most powerful image analysis tools provided by mathematical morphology. In this method, we first build the distance function of the blob image, and then extract the regional minima as markers, finally the watershed transformation is performed. The applications of this algorithm is illustrated using examples of red blood cell segmentation and broken medicine pills detection.
