Abstract

A computing paradigm popularized by the search for life in outer space is now being directed at understanding life from the inside. Two recently launched programs--one independent, the other under the auspices of Stanford University--have developed SETI@home-like distributed computing programs that rely on lay participants' computing power to help them unlock the biological mystery of how proteins fold.
