Abstract

Many colleges and universities have adopted Javaä, or are considering its adoption, as the language of choice for students in CS1 and CS2. The choice of Java either leads to or follows from a collateral decision to introduce object-oriented techniques at this level. Those making the transition to Java and object-oriented techniques must resolve many issues, including the selection of a program development environment. The ideal environment would be inexpensive, would be easy to learn, and would highlight, rather than obscure, the design of an object-oriented system. The purpose of this tutorial is to introduce educators to just such a development environment.
