The ultimate goal of the COMFORT project is to automate the performance tuning of database systems. The project addresses several important tuning issues of parallel database systems in a multi-user environment, and it aims to develop general architectural principles of a self-tuning database system. This project synopsis discusses the overall goals and the rationale of our approach, and it gives a brief overview of the current work.
