Abstract

ACM held a conference on the history of personal workstations at Palo Alto, CA on January 9-10, 1986. There were presentations by thirteen pioneering researchers, primarily from projects funded by ARPA at MIT, the Stanford Research Institute, and the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center. The participants described their motivation, the systems they developed and the goals of the organizations where they worked. This paper summarizes and discusses the conference.
