Abstract

The problem of keeping documentation current with an evolving software system has always been a major concern in software engineering, especially as deriving an understanding of a program's logic may represent as much as 90% of the cost of maintenance. Reverse engineering, the processing of source code to extract higher levels of abstraction, promises to be a viable solution to this problem as tools may be developed to automatically extract design information from a software system. This paper describes the design and development of one such tool: the Object Diagram Generator (ODGen) developed at Auburn University for automatically generating graphical documentation for Ada programs.
