Abstract

In this position paper basic concepts for an open architecture of a world-wide financial multidatabase system are presented. The environment, international banking, is first discussed and the key concept, autonomy is refined. In this extremely autonomous environment traditional multidatabase concepts must be revised. An architecture based on a new nested transaction concept, called semantic transaction (s-transaction), is outlined. Basic properties of these transactions and the requirements for an architecture that supports them are described.
