Abstract

We describe a new storage architecture (MSSA), designed to meet the needs of existing and emerging applications such as those with multimedia presentation support requirements. We emphasize the open, object orientated aspects of its design. The MSSA servers' operations may be specialized and new file classes may be created as a hierarchy of value adding services. The access control mechanism extends through this hierarchy and can guarantee secure provision of services in an open, widely distributed environment.
