Abstract

From the Publisher:Health and medical informatics encompass a broad field that is rapidly developing in both its research and operational aspects. The discipline has many dimensions, including social, legal, ethical, and economic. The wide variety of platforms, data, applications, and users poses an enormous challenge to information technology management in health care. This resource puts a special emphasis on issues dealing with the most recent innovations, such as telemedicine, Web-based medical information and consulting systems, expert systems, and artificial intelligence. Among other topics addressed are information architecture for health care information processing, application of interface and communication engines, standardization of information interchange, data administration and data ownership, advances in community health information networks planning, and scheduling of patients and services in a hospital environment. Also covered are Internet and intranet applications, the use of information technology for medical quality assessment, government policies on health care information management, and privacy issues versus the availability of data in case of medical emergencies.Adi Armoni is the associate dean and head of the computer and information systems department at the Tel Aviv College of Management. He serves as a senior consultant for leading financial institutes, insurance companies, technology firms, and health organizations and is the editor of Healthcare Information System. He lives in Tel Aviv, Isreal.
